Alicia is a young women that has lost her mother, lives with her father and studies at a college for the first time. She stays up late studying and wakes up early to make food for herself and her father. She fears mice. Her father tells her that mice do not exist and soon, she fears her father, too.
The protagonist of the vignette is Alicia, now a college student who lives in Esparanza’s neighborhood. She lives with her father, who believes that a woman’s place is to make food and assume a more traditional role in the household. She “inherited her mama’s rolling pin and sleepiness.” She takes on a lot of responsibility and is tired because of that.
