The Columbian Exchange was an advance in resources for both Europe and the Americas around 1492. It was an exchange between the Europeans and Native Indians but eventually went global. When the Europeans first arrived in America, The Indians had never seen horses, oranges, pears, bananas and worst of all coffee! Imagine living without some of your every day essentials. But the Native Americans also had many things the Europeans did not have, including corn, beans, pineapples and chocolate! The Europeans and Indians traded not only these fine goods but also many sicknesses and diseases including smallpox, measles, and malaria which killed many of the Indians civilization. While the Columbian exchange brought us many yummy and helpful things, it also killed many defenseless people.
<- New World items in my house....
As you can tell from the pictures my family consumes more Old World items, which include more greens, and healthy stuff (though that's not my personal choice) But we do enjoy some items from the New World.. Most importantly chocolate (; If we didn't have our Old World foods our diets would be drastically effected. We wouldn't have as many fruit smoothies, kale potato chips, and we wouldn't be able to enjoy my moms lemon/chicken dish. Without our Old World products we wouldn't eat as healthy, and wouldn't have as much vitamin C in our system like we do now. I know my dad would be at a loss without his precious coffee. If we didn't have our Old world products our normal system would really change. So I am very thankful for both Old and New world items.
