He gives the Lone Woman the name of Karana, forever embedding her story in the mind's of young readers for years to come.

On July 25, 1939, Dr. Woodward and companion return to the island for the County Museum of Los Angeles Channel Island expeditions. During this time, the whalebone hut described in Captain Nidever's reports, and the place in which Juana Maria is believed to have taken shelter, was photographed and recorded.

The Santa Barbara Mission sends George Nidever to find the missing woman. He returns to the Mission with Juana Maria, the name she is christened with on her deathbed only 7 weeks after her rescue. It is assumed that the new diet and lifestyle led to dysentry and her death.
The Santa Barbara Mission hears of the Russian and Aluetian invasion of the Island of San Nicolas. The Mission sends a schooner for the rescue of the natives. Juana Maria was left behind during this rescue as she allegedly went back to find her child but a storm arose and the ship had to leave. The story says her child was killed by wild dogs, leaving the lone woman to live alone for 18 years.
