The Hawaiian Islands remained a U.S. territory until 1959, where they became the 50th state. The petition against the annexation is proof of how the people of Hawaii felt about the annexation
The last monarch of Hawaii was Queen Lili'uokalani in 1892, which was later replaced by provisional government. President Benjamin Harrison, sumitted a treaty to annex the Hawaiian Islands to the U.S. Senate for ratification. In 1897, there was only 46 senators in favor for the annexation, there was only 2 / 3 of the majority need for approval.
Today, there is a growing movement on the islands to revive interest in the Hawaiian language and culture. Primary sources such as this petition bear witness that there is another side to the story.
Hawaii was a independent nation. Untied States government was concerned that an imperiallistic European nation would take over and exploit hawaii sugar resources. By exercising the Monroe Document, the United States was able to keep the European nations from moving into Hawaii.
Americans acquired a true foothold in Hawaii as result of the sugar trade. In 1890, when Congress approved the McKinley Tariff, which raised import rates on foreign sugar.
The united states wanted to make sure that hawaii didnt end up in a European super power. Also, America felt like that they would need a strong foothold in the islands as to not lose this significant location. However, Hawaii was being exploited and Queen Liliuokalani tried to regain the monarchy in her kingdom.
