In this story there is no "person" antagonist, but the climate the Newell family is in is their antagonist. The climate is what made the book. Because of the volcanic erruption they had to take a trip to their cabin. If you were to picture the climate/volcano you would see a layer of white ash everywhere. Everyone would have ash on them and the sky is white, letting no sunlight in.
Miles and his family live in Minneapolis and things get rough. Food and sunlight are scarce, and gas is limited. Miles creates the Ali Princess to escape the city to there cabin in the woods. They run into many problems along the way including bandits and thieves.
Volcanoes have erupted world wide and have sent clouds of ash into the sky. Putting natural resources in short supply and people are starting to steal other resources from other families. Miles and his family leave the city to flee to their cabin in the woods. They encounter challenges that add on to their initial conflict.
Miles and his family have to move to another cabin. Miles remembers the things Mr. Kurz taught him and they make their way to his cabin. In the end the conflict is solved when they reach Mr. Kurz's cabin. He uses the things Mr.Kurz taught him from his stories to help them survive.
The book takes place in a post apocalyptic world were ash blots out most of the sky and natural resources are low. The family travels on the road. They make many stops and go to Dairy Queen and McDonalds. They make it to two cabins. One of which they stay at.
Memory Boy is written in Miles' perspective. The writer uses the words I, my, and mine to reveal that he is telling the story. He also has flashbacks to Miles' past and no one else's.
The mood of the book is kind of dark and desperate. They are trying to survive and they fight off bandits and elements. They are also consistently losing stuff like their cabin and their old home. During the story they are also desperate for food and survival stuff.
Miles's motivation in the book is to keep his family safe and survive. His drive to complete that keeps his family alive and on the move. Miles also completed that by getting them to Mr. Kurz's cabin were they could survive till the world became less bad.
I gave Memory Boy a three and a half star rating. I liked the fact that it was a fast pace at some parts, but i didn't like when in slowed down during flash backs and the beginning. When it switched from the present to the past and back got a little confusing. That's why I rated Memory Boy a three and a half.
