of the Salem Town Church

- She was 71 when she was accused

and tried for being a witch

- She was one of the "unlikely"

people to be tried because of her

respect among townspeople and

her overall good personality

-Hard of hearing

-39 prominent members of the

community signed a petition on

her behalf

-Was almost proven innocent; response

to a question was "I cannot help it, the

devil may appear in my shape."

-That statement was enough of a

confession to prove her guilty

Lillian Hellman

-communist

-famous author

-personal issues brought about the negative comments from Mary McCarthy in the aired interview

-Mary McCarthy said that Lillian Hellman was a bad and dishonest writer

-tried to publicly sue Mary McCarthy for libel

-never reported any other communists she was working with

-They were both accused with barely any evidence

-Well liked among people

-Both died after the trials
