GMOs and their Businesses

Issues:

  • foreign GMOs typically cheaper than food grown in its native country
  • growing large amounts of GMOs requires equally large amounts of workers
  • some companies have marketed products without testing to determine if said products are harmful or not

However, there are some major concerns being raised over GMOs.

With food an ever increasing problem, leaders around the world constantly worry about our eating habits. Some predict a population expanse so huge and so sudden there will be worldwide hunger, and even starvation, while normal food production rates are expected to remain the same.

Pope Francis recently published an Encyclical titled On Care for Our Common Home. He briefly discusses how GMOs have potential to help solve world hunger, but there are some areas that need to be straightened out.

There are so many components in the creation and distribution of GMOs that steps need to be taken in order to ensure the entire process is a moral one.

  • produce more food without endangering other life
  • make sure no companies in charge of distributing GMOs are taking advantage
  • local economies need to be taken into account

  • require more herbicides/pesticides than normal crops
  • farmers are forced to use older and more risky chemicals on GMOs
