The purple loosetrife is a flower native to Europe and Asia. It was likely brought to America as seeds in the ballast of ships and was released throught the water in the 19th century. The roots of purlple loosetrifes cover large amounts of space under the ground, taking large amounts of nutrients from native plants, stemming their growth and reducing biodiversity. In 1992, the Canadian and American governments agreed on the release of two European leaf eating beetles that are natrual enemies of the loosetrife. This massively decreased their populations, and helped native plants to re-establish.
