Samneric

In the middle of the novel

In the beginning of the novel

Here, the boys are the only ones, besides Piggy, that are still on Ralph's side. They are loyal and are supporting who they believe is better.

When we begin to get to know the twins, it is obvious that the two aren't leaders but follow the crowd. They don't have a big role and therefore don't stand out.

Key Factors

There a few significant aspects to these inseparable twins:

The main one is that by Jack calling them Samneric, he takes away their identity and individuality.

They are good intentioned but are unfortunately, weak-minded.

In the group of boys, they are part of the 'Bigguns'.

Appearance

Symbolism

  • Identical twins
  • Bullet-headed
  • Chunky and vital
  • Don't have enough skin
  • Towed hair

Samneric represent ordinary people. They want to be good and do what they believe is right but aren't strong enough to resist being caught up in what the majority does and are too weak-minded to stand up against evil.

In the end of the novel

Samneric get tortured by Jack and have to betray Ralph.
