GOAL!

Prefix....anti, ante

1. anti = "against, opposite"

2. ante = "before"

Prefix.......... a-, ab-, abs

"away, from; away from"

aberation - different from what is expected (moved away from the norm)

absolve - forgive and free from wrongdoing (moved away from the guilt)

Assimilation - sometimes the spelling of prefixes changes to facilitate pronunciation.

The n of the prefix in- changes into a "double consonant" when the word would be too hard to pronounce.

in- + legal = illegal or in- + regular = irregular

When the base of the word begins with "b" or "p", the prefix in- changes to im-.

in- + bibe = imbibe or in- + port = import

Prefix ----------- in

(im, il, ir)

1. Negative ("not")

It was impossible to see, because the fog had made the road ahead invisible.

2. Directional ("in, on, into")

Goods that are imported undergo inspection upon arrival.
