From the Prehistoric era is one of the first works of art ever - the so-called Woman from Willendorf. Found in Willendorf, Austria, this small figurine (only about four inches tall) is made of limestone and has traces of red ocher on it. Because there are no written documents from the Prehistoric period, there's a lot of guesswork when it comes to determining the function and meaning of a work of art. And as we'll see, the Woman from Willendorf doesn't offer us any definitive answers (though we can make an educated guess).
