REAL LIFE CONNECTION
WHY ARE REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS ESSENTIAL???
REASON #1: REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS ARE FUNDAMENTAL HUMAN RIGHTS.
REASON #2: NEARLY HALF OF ALL PREGNANCIES IN THE UNITED STATES ARE UNPLANNED.
REASON #3: INCREASING ACCESS TO CONTRACEPTION LEADS TO A DECREASE IN UNPLANNED PREGNANCIES.
REASON #4: WE HAVE ENTERED THE SIXTH MASS EXTINCTION. DONT HAVE LOTS OF KIDS
REASON #5: BECAUSE IT’S KIND OF A BIG DEAL.
REAL LIFE CONNECTION
DENIAL OF REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS
It would be highly inappropriate to put memes on sexual abuse. You would need to be Bill Cosby level of savage to do that. Sorry to disappoint. hehe discussion question: why am i so cool?
Who: Tamr
Problem: She is forced intro random acts of sexual abuse by her husband, and is incapable of leaving her marriage. Society has altered Tamr’s perception of truth as she is unable to define marital rape as rape. This is a psychological coping mechanism for Tamr so her daily abuse is less traumatizing. Deeply scarred by ignorance of the people she trusted and abuse from her husband, she felt suicide was the only escape.
Quote: “The torture grows night after night and I am unable to do anything about it. I tried running away, but there was no one to go to. Even my family sent me back. They said it’s ok if is my husband, like that makes it fine” (al-Shaykh 72).
“I tried seeking help but no one understood me. They blamed me as if I am the cause of rape, that is if you could call it rape” (al-Shaykh 116).
“All I wanted was to be listened to, but they all failed to understand. Do they fail to see that what they have done exceeds far beyond rape” (al-Shaykh 139).
I put these 3 quotes, because i was having hard time picking 1 and my eyes were shutting closed.
REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS
LETS TAKE A QUICK BREAK
DISCUSSION QUESTION: If Nur was educated, would that have changed anything or does she just think that? Does being educated changed how others perceive someone in society?

We still see problems in the world regarding gender based employment:
Despite the progress working women have made, millions are struggling in low-paying, low-opportunity jobs. They can’t quit. They can’t advance. They can’t earn enough to make ends meet.
Basically:
1. Work-life balance
2. Gender pay gap
3. Harassment in workplace
4. Equal career opportunities
5. Having children during career
Most of these problems do not effect men, and becomes a problem.
REAL LIFE CONNECTION
GENERAL INFORMATION
Problem: Restriction on employment disempowers her, causing her to feel psychologically alienated and disadvantaged. Harassed for her gender and feels disapproved in society.
Quote: “I was hiding because I was a woman and I was working” (al-Shaykh 4).
i could not find any appropriate picture, so here is me yesterday working on this presentation. This hopefully explains why its so bad. hehe fml
EMPLOYMENT
What it teaches us: Girls are still denied education across the world
Education is important. It is the solution to life's problems:
(child labor, early marriage, knowing your rights, leaving patriarchal society, so you don't have to wait for your green card and instead come to Canada without having to be married)
Why is education important (female): Nur’s denial of education as a child became the root cause of powerlessness in her present. This powerlessness led her to realize how lack of education let's patriarchal societies oppress and confine women within their psychological boundaries, leading to loss of individuality and depression. Imagine the immense possibilities in life if you go to school and you are free from the oppressive society.
"I AM AN INDEPENDENT WOMAN WHO DONT NEED NO MAN" - your future self.
Why is education important (men): Education makes up for other things (hahaahaha)
This doesn't work. This guy needs to figure his life out.
You dont want to be this guy lmao
lmao. This girl's prob a savage in real life. Basically this meme is saying how religion is falsely used to oppress people, when it is your right to do as you wish in any religion. (obvs with consequences after death, but that's another topic)
REAL LIFE CONNECTION
Problem: Feels suppressed in her marriage and believes with education she could protect her rights. She realizes she is part of an orthodox society which uses religion as an excuse to oppress women.
Quote: “Religion is just another excuse of oppressing women. The true power of this oppression arises from the patriarchal society which fails to realize that even an illiterate woman understands the rights she is giving away by being illiterate” (al-Shaykh 265).
Book: Women of Sand and Myrrh
Author: Hanan al-Shaykh
Theme: Psychological confinement of women leads to loss of individuality and depression.
Background: The women in this novel are part of a patriarchal society, oppressed from equal rights and limited to chores of a house.
Main Characters: Suha, Tamr, Nur, and Suzanne.
Critical Lens: Feminism
Connection to World: Access to education
Employment opportunities
Reproductive health & rights
haha This meme is jokes cause poor man is doing nothing, and those women are not even related to him, and still they are like stop oppressing me. haha tbh i couldn't find anything else online, haha just laugh or I fail... haha (crying emoji)
STILL ILLITERATE
Character: Nur
Problem: Discouraged by her illiteracy and feels she disappoints her kids for not understanding them
Quote: “Only if I had the chance to education, I would have the confidence to raise my own children” (al-Shaykh 251).
Cool meme haha - Nur is kind of like this but Lebanese, living in Saudi Arabia. (woah trippy) Also Nur doesn't use computer. She is too busy gossiping and being senti all the time.
