Innocence in TKAM

Natural and traditional innocence

Innocence

Connections between innocence

A Character that exemplified natural innocence was Boo Raddly. This is because he was judged on something that he did along time ago to his father. He was also pre-judged because of the rumors spread about him for example Jem and Scout pre judged him on what they heard. A way he shows innocence is because no one in the town really knows him or have seen him because he never comes out of his house, this gives him a natural innocence because he does not want to be a part of maycomb and its drama. Also he wants to be friends with Jem and Scout so he tries to do this by leaving objects in the knot hole. This example also shows his natural innocence

In the book to kill a mocking bird a major theme in the story is innocence. In the book there are different types of innocence such as natural, traditional and child innocence. The characters we found that exemplified these types were Scout, Mayella, Boo, Tom and the town of maycomb. Quote: "Justice will not be served until those who were unaffected are as outraged as those who are" - Benjamin Franklin

With all of the many different types of innocence we found that many of them had something in common with one another. The town of Maycomb to Boo Raddly this is because the town judged him this developed his natural innocence. Boo Raddly to Scout this is because Boo was very child like himself and he wanted to be friends with her this developed her child innocence. Scout to Mayella this is because they both very naive and unaware of their situations this linked them together through child innocence. Lastly Mayella to Tom Robinson this is because her child innocence made her unaware of the traditions in maycomb and how it would affect Tom this naturally developed Toms traditional innocence.

Child innocence

Traditional innocence

Importance to TKAM

Innocence we see today

A way Mayella shows child innocence is because she wanted someone to show her love and pay attention to her. This is why she tried to get Tom Robinson to do that. Mayella did not think that anyone would find out and does not want to convict Tom but because he was black her father was not happy. This really shows her child innocence because Mayella was not aware of how this could affect Tom and his family and to how far the situation would go

The importance of the theme of innocence in the novel was that we got to understand that not only Tom and Boo were mocking birds but many other important characters were, in their own way. By further understanding their innocence we got to learn more about the character and how their innocence affected their actions. For example when Boo kills Bob Ewal in order to protect the children, we see that his natural innocence makes the children not suspect it was him.

One of the Characters the showed Child innocence was Scout. this is because she is very young and does not understand much of what is going on for example when she is in front of the mob and started talking to Mr. Cunningham about his son. The way this shows innocence is because scout is not aware of the degree of the situation. Another way she shows innocence is when she rolls up to the Raddly house and does not have a reaction because she is rather curious then scared. lastly Atticus tries to protect scouts innocence and this is why she remains this way throughout the book.

A way that the town of maycomb shows traditional innocence is because they grew up being taught certain things and are not open for change. one example would be that they grew up hearing that blacks are bad, liars, and can not be trusted. Being brought up like this makes them develop a negative attitude towards things and change. A way maycomb showed traditional innocence was when Ms. Stephanie was hypocritical towards the blacks and the jews, this is because she grew up getting taught that blacks were low class and not being told anything about jews. Also keeping tradition in their families shows innocence for example the Ewals were very low class people and because mayella liked a black man they would be veiwed even lower which he father did not like.

The character that shows traditional innocence is Tom Robinson. This is because of the history with the towns events, he knows that a black mans word against and white mans means nothing. The way he shows traditional innocence is by accepting the fact that he does not have a chance, one because he is a black man and also because of all the myths the whites say about the blacks. Although some people part of the trail believed he was innocent he knew that what ever he said nothing would change the outcome of the case.
