When authors write, they pay special attention to word choice and detail to create a temporary state of mind or feeling and help the reader understand what the book (or poem, story, novel, etc.) is about, and how the characters are feeling. This is called the mood.
In the beginning of the book, the story had a bitter, rebellious, and suspenseful mood. The Socs had money, cars, respect, and opportunity but the Greasers were poor, and had to work extremely hard for what they had. Every one was prejudiced against them because of their clothes, long hair, and greasy appearance. Another mood was terror, from in the middle of the book, after Johnny killed Bob. Pony and Johnny were scared for their own safety and feared the police. The mood switches to sadness for Johnny, when he died after the fire, and for Dallas, when he got himself shot by the police. By the end of the book, the mood has some level of hope when he reads Johnny's last letter and decides to write his biography about the problems he had to face as a Greaser.
