Characteristics of Descriptive writing

Purpose

Organization

Portrays people, places, or things with vivid details to help readers visualize or create a mental picture of what is being described.

Description tells what something looks, smells,tastes, feels, and sounds like.

  • The Introduction
  • should establish purpose. Think about the reason you are writing this.
  • sets tone for impression. What do you want your reader to focus on?
  • The Body
  • includes details (sensory, factual, figurative).
  • includes thoughts and feelings
  • should be arranged in a local order.
  • has transitions that connect ideas
  • Conclusion
  • restates the impression/main idea.
  • may summarize major points in body.

Good descriptive essays include:

1. Sensory Details: appeals to all senses

2. Figurative Language: compares two unlike things. Examples:

  • Simile- comparing two things using like or as: busy as a bee.
  • Metaphor- comparing two things without using like or as: her eyes are vast stars.

3. Dominant Impression: central theme that connects to the thesis.

4. Precise Language: use vivid vocabulary and good word choice.

5. Organized: by time, location, etc.
