Song:To Celia

by:Ben Johnson

Type of poem/Meter/Rhyme scheme

Presented by: Pamela Clough

"Song: To Celia" is a sixteen-line iambic poem written in four quatrains. The content of the poem divides after the second quatrain to form two octets to show two different scenes.

Meter: every odd line is Iambic tetramter and every even line is Iambic trimeter.

Rhyme scheme: The rhyme is abcb, abcb in the first stanza. In the second it is defe, defe.

Both of these contribute to making the poem more lyrical like a love song to Celia.

Metaphors and allusions

The speaker uses wine metaphorically as love in the first stanza. Using wine instead something else makes it seem like he is intoxicated by her. All he wants her to do is "kiss but in the cup" so he can know she has feelings for him. She doesn't even have to drink to him. He just wants her to know his soul thirsts for her, and he hopes she will feel the same way.

The wreath is symbolic of His love for her. He hopes she will accept it and hold on to it. Sadly, she sends it back. It doesn't die though, it grows, showing his love is still growing for her and is never ending.

He also alludes to Jove's nectar cup. In greek mythology Jove's name was Zeus and nectar is what the gods drank to preserve their immortality. The speaker says he would give up immortality for the woman though.

The End

Speaker/Tone/Meaning of poem

The speaker is a man who is madly in love

with a woman and is pleading for her to love him too. His tone is very passionate and affectionate. He expresses his love for her through his words and sends her a wreath as a symbol of his love. However, she returns it showing she does not love him back. He is still in love with her though, and he enjoys smelling the wreath because it smells more like her. His love even grows for her after she denies him.
