Self-Portrait on the Borderline Between Mexico & the United States

What is the social/cultural/political issue addressed?

Frida Kahlo's self portrait addresses the differences between Mexico & the United States; politically, culturally and socially.

  • U.S is industrial, it has big buildings, machinery and smoke coming out of an industrial building. The sky is grey and smoggy, indicating a polluted and dreary country.

-Frida Kahlo, 1932

Why did Frida choose this issue?

  • She chose this issue because she is known for being a political activist who's extremely loyal to her country, Mexico.
  • When she painted this, she was away in Detroit with Diego, however her heart was still set in Mexico.

The fact that Frida was "homesick" gave her the inspiration to paint this issue and also to express her longing to be back in her work.

  • Mexico in comparison is slightly brighter with blue sky and flowers, however for the most part Mexico seems to be a country of destruction.
  • The painting shows the remains of once beautiful Mexico, with the deteriorating building, a skull and garbage.

Is Frida effective in communicating the message?

Yes, we believe she effectively communicates her message:

This is an important issue because the U.S tends to look down upon Mexico and its people. This painting shows that neither country is perfect and that they are more similar than they realize.

  • Frida split the painting in half with herself in the middle, therefore showing she appreciates and thinks about Mexico and the states.
  • The contrast between the objects, background and buildings in Mexico and the U.S is effective.
  • The fact that she paints herself holding the Mexican flag depicts her message of equality and love for her country.

How did Frida communicate her message visually?

Frida is showing how different Mexico is, from the United States.
