The Ante-Bellum Years:
Innis Brown - a slave freed by the war, who meets Vyry at the end of the war, saves her from an attacker, and then marries her legally.
Consisted of vyry growing up on the plantation, with little to nobody after Aunt Sally is sold. Until she meets Randall Ware and have kids. Randall Ware is her only glimmer of hope for freedom.
Randall Ware - a free black man who knows how to read, write, and figure. And who is a blacksmith. He promises to marry Vyry and buy her freedom, but Marse John won't let him.
Aunt Sally - a slave in the house on the Dutton Plantation. She is the cook and teaches Vyry everything she knows. She acts as a mother to Vyry until she is sold away.
The Civil War Years:
Miss Salina or Big Missy - the wife of Marse John and mother of his two legitimate children. She is cruel to the slaves, especially Vyry.
John Morris Dutton - "Marse" or "Marster John," he was also the owner of the Dutton Plantation, Vyry's father.
Vyry- is Sis Hetta and Marse John's daughter. She is a slave, but her skin is so fair she can "pass" as a white women.
Since Randall Ware is "missing in action" Vyry's glimmer of hope of freedom is dwindling. Living in the years of war and death. Vyry continues to be head cook for the Duttons plantation until the end.
This ended with Vyry and Inis settling in a place of their own with their children. Until Randall Ware shows his face again to take his son jim with him.
The Reconstruction Years:
A time when nothing was left behind but a war-ravaged state, devoid of civil order and fast approaching chaos. But that didn't stop Vyry and her family they kept on going as long as they could.
A novel told in three parts of a mixed slave girl going through her fair amount of trials and troubles as she finds loved ones and loses loved ones while she rises out the ashes of her fighting enslaved people and gains her freedom.

The setting of Jubilee focuses on the life story of a biracial slave girl during the American Civil War. The setting is taking place in Georgia and later in different parts of Alabama in the mid-19th century. Before, during, and after the Civil War.

Lucy-Lucy is Vyry's older half sister, by Hetta's slave husband. After being beaten and branded for running away, Lucy succeeds in escaping to freedom.
This novel is told in thirds person omnscient. Because it is told from someone on the outside looking in, but can still reveal the characters thoughts.
Miss Lillian - the daughter of Marse John and Big Missy. She is the same age as Vyry. She also looks like Vyry. They used to play together when they were younger.
John Dutton Jr.- Big Missy and Marse John son. He takes over the plantation when his father dies and serves in the Confederate Army.
the title of this book, Jubilee is all the symbolism that is needed. Because jubilee means a state of joy or exultation. And jubilee is shown through the characters and their experiences.
Jim, Minna, and Harry - Vyry’s legitmate children.
the theme for Jubilee is the hope of deliverance from the bounds of ropes and chains of slavery.
One of the main conflicts in Jubilee is slaves against masters. this is proven between Vyry and Marse John.
Another conflict is that she is the biracial/or mixed slave girl daughter, of Marse John.
She is treated like a house slave but can pass for a white woman.
