Even those who work for the Captiol in the districts go hungry

While people starve in the districts, food is an abundance in the capitol

1. On page 44, the capitol food is so rich that Peeta and Katniss are having trouble keeping it down, Katniss thinking how "Neither of our stomachs is used to such rich fair"

2. In the capitol, food comes at the press of a button "He presses a button on the side of the table. The top splits and from below rises a second tabletop that holds our lunch"(page 65)

1. Page 17, Katniss states that"She could be shot on a daily basis, but the apatite of those in charge protect her"

2. She even sells strawberries from outside of the fence to the mayor of the district, stating "When we finish our business at the market, we go to the back door of the mayor's house to sell half the strawberries"

None of the districts get any of the product that they supply the capitol with, and only a very minimal pay

Thesis

1. Page 282 Rue explains that they're not allowed to eat the crops or else "They whip you and make everyone watch"

2. In district 12 the only coal the people get is "Just what we buy and whatever we track in on our boots." (page 283)

  • For a utopia such as the capitol to exist, a lesser society such as the districts has to be putting in work and labor into sustaining the needs of the larger society; thus proving the capitol to be a dystopia

In many of the districts, starvation is common

1. Page 6 katniss says "District 12, where you can starve to death in saftey"

2. Page 6 also mentions food shortages, stating ''Even at home when I am less pleasant, I avoid discussing tricky topics. Like the reaping, or food shortages, or the Hunger Games. '

In order to keep the districts supplying them, the capitol has a very strict grip

1. The capitol doesn't let any of the districts have communication between each other. On page 41 the book explains "Travel between the districts is forbidden except for officially sanctioned duties"

2. The peace keepers are there to enforce the capitols laws, punishing civilizations for breaking any law, no matter how small.

In the real world

This concept of a larger society controlling and being supplied by a smaller one can relate to events throughout history, especially in modern times. Ancient Egypt and Persia are examples of civilizations that built their greatness on the backs of slaves and less powerful societies.

Even America today exhibits similar aspects, importing the greater amount of our goods from 3rd world countries.
