Conclusions

Oakland, CA- The community

- $600,00 deficit

- Conflicts with funding and accreditation

- The need for sustained support services

- The need for more professional development

- Unique need for career services

- The college boasts high enrollment numbers (12,100 students at Laney).

-The graduation rates however are very low. 12% of students graduate.

- The retention rate is only 59%

- The transfer into a four year college percentage is at about 26%

- Laney must operate much different than other community colleges. ( More support like child care, counseling services, restorative justice/gang intervention, and non-traditional advising hours).

- The issues of the community directly impact the community college. If colleges do not operate at a higher level, than the impoverished community, societal issues will perpetuate.

- Funding formulas MUST start taking societal issues into a weightier account while distributing funds. Decision makers must be held responsible for their financial choices.

Issue

Laney College continues to experience budget cuts. Laney College is the most accessible college to Oakland, CA youth.

With the lack of funding however, how are student needs being met to ensure student success? How can we expect these students to perform to the same standards as students in affluent and safer communities? Unless we invest into this community, we risk widening the achievement gap for this student population.
