The solvents in this experiment are the waxes and oils and the solutes are the flavors and scents. When heated in the microwave, these things combine to create a homogeneous mixture that cools and hardens into a lip gloss ready to be tested by consumers.
When tested by consumers, my hypothesis was only correct in the best looking category. The overall best ranked lip gloss was the Vanilla. For better results, I would suggest the use of actual beeswax instead of Burt's Bees Miracle Salve. I would also suggest cutting down on the amount of lip gloss created.
In this experiment, I created three lip glosses using a few household ingredients and a lot of chemistry. This project shows how chemistry is used in the world of beauty and marketing.
Best Looking: Vanilla
Best Tasting: Vanilla
Best Feeling: Almond Honey
Hypothesis
Out of the three lip glosses I create-Almond Honey, Vanilla, and Cocoa Mint-, Cocoa Mint will have the best flavor, Almond Honey will feel the best, and Vanilla will look the best when ranked by "consumers"
This experiment creates mixtures using oils and waxes as solutes and solvents. The specific ingredients are petroleum jelly, sweet almond oil, coconut oil, beeswax (substituted by Burt's Bees Miracle Salve in this demonstration), cocoa butter, shea butter, aloe vera gel, vitamin E liquid, and peppermint oil. By melting and mixing different combinations of these things, you create glosses with different textures, colors, tastes, and all other characteristics.
Almond Honey-
8 oz. sweet almond oil
2.5 oz. beeswax
1 tsp honey
Vanilla-
3 Tbsp coconut oil
2 Tbsp petroleum jelly
2 Tbsp aloe vera gel
1/2 tsp vanilla
Cocoa Mint-
1.5 oz shea butter
1.0 oz Burt's Bees Miracle Salve
1.5 oz cocoa butter
1 drop vitamin E liquid
5 drops peppermint oil
