The Elizabethan's believed that the earth was at the center of the Universe so that gave them superior power to whoever would try to invade.
They also believed in the great chain of being, a ladder of sort where everything in the universe or on earth had a place. From "God" to "Peasants".
The Elizabethan astrologers believed they could predict the future or upcoming disasters by the way the stars aligned. Or predict the outcome of your life by the way the stars were aligned on the day you were born.
Since everybody watched the presentation with much enthusiasm were playing Jeopardy.
The Elizabethan's thought that the Earth was at he center of the universe, and that there were only 7 other planets. The moon, Saturn, Mercury, Venus, The Sun, Mars and Jupiter and that they rotated around the Earth in concentric circles.
The picture above is a 16th century engraving showing Ptolemy's system of the universe with its concentric spheres. That is where they got their information about the other planets.
The "planets" affected the affairs of the earth, and astrologers felt that they could predict the future by knowing what formation the stars would be in that day. They believed that when the stars would move and comets and eclipses were appearing that they were believed to be signs that disaster was in the near future.
The Great Chain of Being is an Elizabethan belief that everything is organized in a Hierarchal manner, from "God" all the way down to minerals and rocks.
In the Shakespearean play, Macbeth, it shows the Elizabethan Order and what happens when it is disrupted. The consequences are shown in the natural world and the human world.
