What is a Metaphor?

A metaphor is a word of phrase for one thing that is used to refer to another thing in order to suggest that they are similar

Shall I Compare Thee To a Summer's Day?

In the text it says that, "the eye of heaven shines" This is a metaphor because it is comparing the eye of heaven to the sun. The eye of heaven is being referred to as the sun. This is different from saying sun because it is making you stop and think of what it is talking about. When I analyzed this poem it is talking about comparing someone to a summer's day. Shakespeare is telling us how the person he is comparing is very different from summer because he is more lovely.

“How does figurative language affect the way we read a text?

The use of figurative language in stories can make the readers read the story in a different way. The use of figurative language in stories helps enhance the depth of emotion and diversity in the story. Another way that the use of figurative language changes the way that the readers read the story is by using different types to make the reader view the story from the main characters perspective and to make the reader more interested in the story.

The Raven

The description is different from saying just because dreams are unfilled your life is difficult. The poem expresses it as hold on to your dreams and know the outcome when your dream goes away.

Dreams by Langston Hughes

The extended metaphor in the story "The Raven" is about death. The Raven constantly saying nevermore tells the reader that the main character will die. The Raven is a symbol of death in the story. At the very end of the story, the narrator says "And the lamp-light o’er him streaming throws his shadow on the floor; And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor; Shall be lifted—nevermore!" This quote means that the narrator has died and his soul will be lifted "nevermore."

Metaphors: "Life is a broken- winged bird that cannot fly". This is metaphor because it compares life to a broken winged bird and it doesn't use like or as.

This metaphor relates to the title because its referring to dreams and how life is full of dreams that can be easily shattered or changed.

This metaphor works because

it expresses how easy it is to have a shattered dream. The metaphor makes it effective because it makes you open your eyes and realize how things could change easily.
