Since there was a new ability to be able to travel, there was a new opportunity to create homes and suburbs away from the city. Before the introduction of the Highway System, cities generally concentrated near coastal areas. After the introduction, suburbs were created and cities were able to move away from coastal areas. Rural areas were converted into their own little cities. If you live in a suburb, you have been affected by the system.

The Interstate Highway System provided an initiative for businesses to expand to different cities. They were able to establish roadside businesses. Without the system today, there would be much less industrial variation throughout different cities and states. We wouldn't see all of the restaurants, hotels, and amusement parks that we see today.
Because of the new found ability to transport manufactured goods speedily and cheaply, commerce and manufacturing became much better. Without the Interstate Highway System, we would be paying more money and would be waiting much longer to receive goods. Railroads and boats would still be our main source of shipping rather than trucks. If you have ever been shipped something, you have been effected by the system.
There were many flaws with roads before the Interstate Highway System was passed. There were unsafe roads, inefficient routes, and traffic jams. Overall, it was difficult, dangerous, and tedious to travel throughout the United States. This lead to The Interstate Highway System, which was an act passed by President Dwight Eisenhower in 1956. The act created a 41,000 mile system of interstate highways. To give an example of the scope of this project, I have provided a map of the highway system.
The Interstate Highway System fostered a nation of drivers. Cars were very sparse because roads were inadequate and cars were expensive. The construction of the highway system lead to car manufacturers selling cars at an affordable cost. Cars became a necessity for everyday transportation.
Everyone has been affected by the Interstate Highway System. A majority of products that people buy have at one point been on the Interstate Highway System. Secondly, simple vehicular transportation from city to city usually requires the use of the highway. Have you ever driven to a different city? Then you have been effected by the system.
