Were there divisions within your tribe during and/or after the war? What impact did this have?

Did your tribe face destruction of property (homes, crops, business) during the Civil War and the need to rebuild afterward? What impact did this have?

Yes there were divisions in the Cherokee tribe. Some of them were for the confederates and some were for the Union, but the mixed bloods who supported Stand Watie and the full bloods who supported John Ross came together and elected former Union officer Lewis Downing and elected him the new chief. The Union party gave stability to the tribal government. (Ch.11 Pg. 172)

How did the required enrollment of the Freedmen (African Americans who had formerly been slaves within the tribe) impact the tribe?

Many mixed blood recruited blacks and whites to come and work on their farms. They also encouraged non indian ranchers to set up cattle in their domains.(Ch. 11 Pg. 177)

The Cherokee nation spent time rebuilding their government and reorganizing their tribe. It seems as if most of the tribe favored the union and elected Lewis Downing, a former union officer, as the new chief. (ch.11 Pg. 172)

How was tribal sovereignty impacted by the Reconstruction Treaty?

They could not have as much freedom because the U.S. Government limited the sovereignty of the Natives.(Ch.11 Pg. 170)

Cherokee Nation and the Civil War

What were the requirements of the Reconstruction Treaty for this tribe? Describe some of the tribal loses because of the treaty.

They were to abolish slavery and give their freed slaves citizenship and property rights. They agreed to the construction of one North-South and one East-West railroad across their country. They lost land and had to give up the western half of Oklahoma for other natives. The Cherokees Ceded to the federal government their lands in Kansas and their control to the outlet of the outer plains. (Ch. 11 Pg. 170)
