Exploring Neo-Aristotelian Criticism

Key Research Question: "Did the rhetor use the available means of persuasion to evoke the intended response from the audience?" (Foss 2009)

1) invention (the location and creation of ideas and materials for the speech)

2) organization (structure/arrangement)

3) style (language)

4) delivery (management of the voice and gestures in the presentation of speech)

5) memory (mastery of the subject matter as well as actual memorization)

Procedures for selecting and analyzing an artifact the neo-Aristotelian way

Three Basic Steps:

(works best for artifacts such as speeches that are not entirely visual)

1) reconstructing the context in which the artifact occurred

2) application of the five canons to the artifact

3) assessing the impact of the artifact on the audience

Purpose: to discover how context affected the rhetoric that was formulated

Three major components of context:

1) rhetor

2) occasion

3) audience
