London Docklands

Outcome

Environment

In 1988, 600 hectares were reclaimed and soon paths and parks were developed.

Old houses on the land were improved.

£300million was spent on improving utilities like gas and water.

Housing

Between the 1950’s to the 1960’s poor quality terrace houses were knocked down.

They were replaced with tower blocks which were cheap to build and provided a large number of towers in a small area.

However large boats couldn’t make it very far downstream so they then moved the docklands.

Unemployment and Housing

Before redevelopment 30,000 jobs were lost between 1970 – 1980.

In 1981 unemployment was 21% which was 50% of Docklands derelict.

50,000 new houses were built and 8,000 local houses were improved.
