BOY OVERBOARD

Left To Sink

________________________________________________

As the pirate attack was happening all the smugglers who had just recently taken their most valuable belongings hopped onto the pirate box. They were left abandoned with a big hole in the boat. They were left to sink. Jamal was very brave and applied the secret soccer in this situation by not just screaming and losing all hopes, but by being caring towards Bibi and loving her , putting her before himself. He didn’t give up he had the determination to make it to Australia with his sister and meet up with his parents he didn’t want to let anyone down. He acted very strong and was being a great model for Bibi to look up to. This would have been so hard for Jamal to keep on going and being strong for his little sister Bibi.

I think that Jamal definitely applied the secret of soccer. The reason is because of his character. Jamal has a strong and suborn character. He will do anything to make sure his family is safe. He wants to show his parents how responsible he is and feels like he carries a lot of responsibility.

ARGH ME HEIGHTY

Split Down The Middle

Jamal woke up and there was water filling up the boat. There was hole in the boat there were sinking. In a matter of time a boat approached. There were pirates on it. The pirates jumped on to the boat and the smugglers hid in safety on their boat. The pirates tried to take all their belongings and left Jamal with a big bruise on his hip, killing him to move it. How unfair they all knew it was planned. Jamal applied the secret of soccer here by not just throwing himself overboard and leaving himself to sink, but he stayed on the boat not losing all hopes and keeping on going. He is a great brother, role model to Bibi.

Jamal and Bibi had kicked their ball into the water and tried to get it. As this was happening, people started boarding the boats so they decided to try and wait by the side of the boat for their parents. This was almost impossible as the flow of people moving the opposite way was so strong. They eventually got pushed onto the boat. This would be okay but they looked around and saw their parents on the other boat. Jamal and Bibi were left on a boat without parents and food. Jamal kept hope and applied the secret of soccer. He did this by even if he was afraid he didn’t show it too much and kept on going no matter what happened. He probably tried harder because he didn’t want Bibi to get scared or discouraged. Luckily he made friends with a girl named Rashida who had food and gave it to them. He kept hope and kept trying. It would be very hard for Jamal to go through this and try to stay tough throughout it for Bibi. He probably wouldn’t have made it if it wasn’t for Rashida and Bibi.

Shooting Down Hopes

SUMMARY

Jamal went to a soccer stadium taking Bibi with him, they were looking for their parents and of course that was the first place that came to mind. Suddenly an army tank arrived on the pitch and let out some women and soldiers. They sat the women down in a line each with a soldier holding a gun to its head. Jamal reassuring Bibi, said it was just a warning to obey the rules, but really doubting that himself. There was one women running around crazily more than the rest, actually she was running exactly like their mum. It was their mum! They must be punishing her for the school. Jamal started running down to the pitch with no plan whatsoever because he knew he had to save his mum. Luckily before he reached it his dad drove his taxi into the building and onto the pitch. Opening up his door for Jamal’s mum to jump into. I think Jamal did apply the secret of soccer by trying to find his parents and he was going to go out on the pitch to save his mum without a plan. He would stop at nothing to save his mum. This would have been so hard for Jamal almost seeing his mum get shot.

Summary of

'Boy Overboard' by

Morris Gleitzman

Soccer-obsessed Jamal lived in Afghanistan. An unfair government made life tough. His sister Bibi was cheeky, curious and brave. The government discovered their mother’s secret school and they had to leave. They waited in a refugee camp for smugglers. Separated from their parents, with no food, Rashida provided. They got attacked by pirates and abandoned; luckily Andrew saved them. Their parents’ boat had sunk and they weren’t in Australia. Fortunately their parents were found and they were reunited.

Dead or Alive

________________________________________________

Bibi and Jamal reached an island that they were told was Australia. They were playing soccer and were surprised that they got no cheering after scoring a goal. They asked what was going on and their reply was that their parents’ boat was sunk and they hadn’t found any bodies. Later they also found out that they weren’t even in Australia. Luckily their parents were eventually found and bought back. Their family was once again reunited. This would have been very hard for Jamal not just the pain that his parents had died, also all these thoughts about looking after Bibi and eating etc. He handled this situation very well by not just having a break down he comforted his sister and was being a great brother. Now that’s definitely applying the secret of soccer.
