Solution

Our Mission...

We have come together to collaborate on designing an action research project to evaluate and analyze our teaching practices as elementary school teachers.

We began by asking ourselves...

"What issue can we address with action research that can improve learning and increase student performance in our schools?"

Our Answer...

The study of

Off-Task Behavior

in students.

We were curious...

After data is collected and analyzed, the Learning Lightbulbs will make recommendations to their schools' grade level teams and administration based on their findings.

Check back in February to see the results...

Methodology

Our Research Questions

We determined quantitative and

qualitative data will be collected daily

over 4 weeks in January and February 2015 in elementary classrooms in Howard and Anne Arundel Counties, Maryland. All team members will be researching the effects of a short, 3-5 minute brain break on the amount of off-task behavior exhibited by target students.

The research design is an A-B-A single subject design with the exception of one team member performing a pre and post intervention design for a whole group.

1. Will short physical brain breaks during a lesson decrease the occurrence of off-task behavior with target students during the instructional time immediately following the brain break?

2. Will routinely incorporating physical brain breaks into lessons, and thus providing students with the knowledge that such breaks are coming in each class period, decrease the occurrence of off-task behavior with target students overall?

Data Analysis

Literature Review

Our team completed a literature review to become familiar with the existing body of knowledge, data, and trends in regards to the effect of brain breaks on student behavior.

  • All team members will analyze and present the data using a bar graph, line graph, and/or pie chart representing the results of the intervention.

  • The graphs will show the % of time the students were on-task and off-task over the course of the research project.

  • Some team members will show the results individually, some will show the data collectively, and some will show results both individually and collectively.

Key Points

  • Exercise increases circulation and the flow of oxygen to the brain, which improves cognitive performance. (Jensen, 2000)

  • Exercise increases the levels of neurotransmitters in certain areas of the brain, which help increase the ability to focus attention and control impulses. (Reilly et al., 2012)

  • Breaks are critical to the learning process because our brains require breaks in order to process and encode new learning. (Jensen, 2000)

  • There is an increase in the amount of educators who are incorporating the use of “brain breaks” to help their students be academically and behaviorally successful in school.
