Waverly invites her mother to go with Rich and her on their honeymoon.

Waverly encounters Lau Po, an old man, in the park. He just so happens to know many tricks and secret strategies of chess. Po is basically the stereotypical Wiseman, a la Star Wars, Highlander

The hero is called upon by some higher power to complete a challenge or solve a problem

The hero encounters somebody who gives them advice or tools to use on the journey ahead

The hero returns to their normal life with their newly found knowledge, where they apply that knowledge to their everyday life

Waverly discovers that her mom is completely okay with her marrying Rich, and that her intentions were never meant to be malicious.

Waverly displays extreme prowess at chess, winning every game she plays. However, her mother sees Waverly's sacrificing of pawns to win the match as a weakness and scolds her for it, much to Waverly's chagrin.

Waverly finally protests her mother's incessant bragging, yelling at her and running away. A few hours later, she returns to find her mother actively ignoring her.

Waverly hesitantly tells her mother that she is engaged to Richard Shields, an enthusiastic white businessman, thinking her mother will disapprove.

Waverly ends up divorcing her first husband, claiming her mother to be the main cause, as she constantly pointed out his flaws.

Waverly begins semi-purposefully losing her chess matches and tournaments, and eventually quits chess for good.
