Theme is...

an underlying message the author wants you to take away.

Theme is not just in books!!

What do you already know about "theme"? (2 minutes)

Ex: Three Little Pigs:

"Hardwork and patience pays off in the end."

"Laziness gets you no where."

"Plan for the future."

How do we determine Theme??

Determine different themes of this song.

a topic (one or two words).

Look for repeated ideas!!

Think: What message is the author trying to send?

Think: What did the main character learn?

"Whatever troubles or dangers might be waiting, Emma knew somehow she'd manage to face them." (p.10)

Conclusion:

This demonstrates that Emma Edmunds is courageous upon entering the War. She knows it will be a dangerous journey; however, her mind is strong and brave.
