Realization was the final theme for Fahrenheit 451. After arriving to his house with the mission of burning it, Montag realized how idiotic his society was. He couldn’t stand it and finally rebelled against his fellow workers. Although he was in the same occupation as them, he could have cared less about their well-being at the time. He finally escaped and ran for his life. As he was not killed, the police had found an alternate to take his place. At that moment, he came to the conclusion that society is atrocious. Their way of containing freedom is inhumane. The way to contain this through censorship had made other people depressed, scared, and hide in secret. No one should be living their life in secret, but instead, they should stand for what they believe and yearn for.
Quote: "The search is over, Montag is dead; a crime against the society has been avenged."
The theme of curiosity is very apparent in this section of the novel. As Montag roams through the night, he had met up with a teenager known by the name of Clarisse McClellan. She is a girl full of inquisitiveness. As she questions Montag, he began to give second thoughts about his job. Being a fireman, burning books, was it truly the correct occupation? He soon begins to ask more and more questions not only to himself, but to Clarisse, Beatty, and his wife. Near the end, he picks up a book while he was on his job, burning an old woman’s house. Montag’s curiosity sparked as he questions why this woman would give up her life just for books. Are books truly something that one could throw their life away for? Since then, he kept the book he took, tried to decipher it, and relate it to his life and its complexities.
Quote: "Of course I'm happy. What does she think? I'm not? he asked the quiet rooms."
"He felt his body divide itself into a hotness and a coldness, a softness and a hardness, a trembling and a not trembling, the two halves grinding one upon the other."
The second section had revolved around the theme of discovery. While Montag got his hands upon a book, notably The Bible, he began to read various ideas presented. After knowing the fact that Clarisse truly passed away, he had no one to go to in order for him to express his opinion in a free environment. Even as he spoke to his wife about it, all she did was reject him. He came to the conclusion of finding and undercover retired professor that he had met in the past. While he had account of his number previously, Montag was able to find Professor Fader. After a while of talking about the book that he had taken along with him, Montag had discovered that there was no simplicity that was included in his adventure. The road towards preaching The Bible was a tall and sharp mountain that can kill him at any moment. However, he did not just give up there. Instead, he used sneaky ideas and words to get his ways of discovering and accomplishing the goals of his curiosity.
Quote: "Poor Millie, he thought. Poor Montag, it's mud to you, too. But where do you get help, where do you find a teacher this late?"
"I don't know. We have everything we need to be happy, but we aren't happy."
