Gender Stereotypes in Disney Movies

Other Stereotypes

Beside the dominant-male stereotype we have the submissive-female stereotype in which female animals/mates are portrayed as the ones that take care of the children. In case of the human females we have Shanti a young Indian girl that is sweet, fearful and beautiful: she's the one that lured Mowgli into the man's village with her lovely voice.

Even though Shanti has a brief appearance on the movie, most of the time you see her carrying a vase full of water, a chore women do in India.

Mowgli

The jungle book is a movie that narrates the story of young Mowgli, a native Indian boy that had to leave his village because a tiger was pursuing him, that is when his adventure starts , at the jungle he meets many animals that will either be his friends or enemies.

The main stereotype is that most of the characters seen in this movie are males , especially the main ones, you see them as the head of each animal group, the dominant ones, the ones with power and the ones that have fun and party.

Many Disney movies portray gender stereotypes in which men are shown as providers, protectors, the perfect man, the one we need, while women are shown as submissive, sweet, weak, beautiful, the perfect woman with the perfect physique and charming personality. This negative stereotypes limit the vision of equality while encouraging prejudice and sexism.
