Vancouver Island Earthquake 1946

By: Rocky and Saroop

THANK YOU FOR LISTENING!!

Other?

The earthquake caused a landslide in the upper areas of the cervus creek. The landslide caused the damming of the creek and made a lake.

The earthquake shattered windows from lighthouses on the coasts and damaged chimneys on houses

Effects?

Measuring 7.2 in magnitude this is Canada's recorded earthquake on land. Damage in places like Courtenay were light because not many people lived in the area, kids were not in school and their were only a few small buildings.

There were mountainous regions that near the provincial park that were hit with a devastating force, fortunately no one was in the area. As there were many affected areas, the three areas that were hit very badly were: castlecrag mountain, cervus creek and in the upper elk river valley.

As this earthquake happen a long time ago, the island only had a population of 190,000. No deaths were recorded and the repair costs for all the damages were only a few million compared to earthquakes these days on the west coast can go up to 50 billion (los angles 1994).

The earthquake was so powerful that you could have felt the effects from interior B.C, as far north as Prince Rupert and as far south as Portland

Causes?

The tectonic plates that caused the earthquake are barely known. There was no warning noticed or given before it occured. Most likely this was a surprise or unknown because the epicenter (the point above the center of disturbance) was very densely forested.

WHERE?

The earthquake happen in Vancouver island, more specifically the epicenter was in the Forbidden Plateau area, west from Courtenay

When?

The date this earthquake shook was Sunday morning June 23rd, 1946 at around 10:15 A.M
