A Separate Peace: Chapter 7

By: Marie Pobanz 2nd Hour

Chapter 7 begins with Brinker congratulating Gene on getting a room all to himself while everyone else has to share.

Brinker and Gene go down to the butt room to smoke. When they arrive Brinker says jokingly that they caught the person who killed Finny. Gene starts to choke up while trying to respond. He then challenges a younger boy to tell him what happened. Finaly Gene mumbles something about having to study French and leaves.

Later on Gene and the rest of his classmates go to the train station to help dig out trains. As he is walking he comes across Leper cross country skiing claiming that he's looking for a beaver dam.

Once they all arrive at the train station Gene goes to work with Brinker and Chet Douglass. He finds the work to be very boring. They cheer when they realize that the train trying to pass through is full of troops. On the walk home they all talk about how they want to enlist.

Upon coming back to Devon they run into Leper. Brinker starts to make fun of him for looking for beaver dams. As they are walking back to their dorms, Brinker tells Gene how badly he wants to enlist into the military.

Gene walks back to his room, excited about the possibilty of enlisting. When he opens his door, Finny is waiting for him.

"Here you are in in your solitary splendor...I wish I knew how to manage things like you. (Brinker 49)"

"Doing away with his roommate so he could have a whole room to himself....Practically fratricide. (Brinker 50)"

"To enlist. To slam the door impulsively on the past...to break the pattern of my life... (Gene 57)"

"Everything that had happened throughout the day faded like that first false snowfall of the winter. Phineas was back. (Gene 59)"

"I'm giving it up, I'm going to enlist. Tomorrow. (Brinker 57)"
