The Call to Adventure and Refusal to Call.

The Return

Odysseus's call to adventure was leaving the Trojan war to get home. The war started when the Trojans attacked the Greeks, Odysseus was then called to come to Troy by the Greeks to aid them in battle. Odysseus's refusal of call to adventure is because of his son, Telemachus, being born. He wants to stay home with his new born son and help his wife Penelope raise him, so at first he says no.

Supernatural Aid

Throughout Odysseus's journey he is helped by many gods to help him get home, but the most helpful god to him was Athena, the goddess of wisdom. She always gave him advice for dangerous situations and she would manipulate the gods to help him get home. She always has Odysseus's back while on the other hand Poseidon absolutely despises Odysseus and never helped him on his journey. He rather was an obstacle and would blow him way off course.

Odysseus finally returns home and is reunited with his family once again, trusting the gods to aid him, he can finally rest and be at peace. He now knows not to be fame-hungry and stubborn, but now humble and patient and putting people first and himself second. He is a new man and he has to be a role-model for everyone else.

The Threshold Guardian

The threshold guardian is mainly Polyphemus but it is also in a way Poseidon. He lands his ship on the island of Polyphemus and go inside the Cyclops' cavern to steal some of his belongings, but Polyphemus comes back and rolls the stone against the entance so there is no way of getting out. Polyphemus is testing Odysseus's strength and ability to figure out how to get off his island alive. Poseidon is also a guardian because Polyphemus is Poseidon's son, Poseidon then gets angered at Odysseus and casts a storm upon his ship to blow him even more farther off course.

Crossing the Threshold

The gift to Odysseus

A Hero's Journey:

The Odyssey

The gift to Odysseus is getting home. He has been trying to get home constantly but was always thrown off course one way or another. He deserves to get home after all the obstacles he had to face, there is no other gift that he would want rather than home.

The threshold is leaving the island of Polyphemus and getting blown off course. After defeating the cyclops, Odysseus is somewhat turning into a new person after working together with his crew to get off the Cyclops' island. Poseidon is the father of Polyphemus and heard his agony so he forced upon a storm that totally throws Odysseus's travel home way off. Odysseus went from a world that he knew before to being thrown off by a storm into an unknown world he does not know anything about.

Helpers and Mentors

Odysseus also faces many helpers and or allies to aid him on his quest home. Some helpers would be Aeolus, Hermes, Eumaeus, Tiresias, Nausicaa, and Alcinous. His mentor is with out a doubt Athena. She helps him the most out of all the gods, she helps him gain confidence and appears in his life constantly but in a positive way.

Atonement of Odysseus

The atonement of Odysseus occurs at Calypso's island. He is upset and with no one to talk to about his problems, he decides to think about his past behavior and noticed the mistakes he committed. Every god except for Poseidon noticed his forgiveness and they forgive him and give him even more aid to get him home.

Odysseus's Challenges

Odysseus faces many challenges throughout his adventure trying to prove his skills of guidance constantly whether it's facing nature, gods, demons, etc. The big challenges include: Polyphemus, Poseidon, Sirens, Circones, lotus eaters, Scylla, Charybdis, Cattle of the Sun God, Lastrygonians, and Circe.

The Abyss and Revelation

Transformation of Odysseus

The abyss would be going to the Underworld. This is Odysseus's hardest challenge yet. He needs to get out of the underworld alive and listen to his given orders. He is facing his darker self which is impatience and stubbornness and trying to conquer it. His revelation is seeking information to guide him but almost dying in the process.

His transformation is becoming a whole different person from arrogant and wanting fame to humble and patient. When he started his quest home, he was very headstrong and arrogant, in this point of the story he is cleansed from all of the negative attributes and is now humble and open to ideas. He learns from his mistakes and develops into the man he is now.
