The story tells us that the first song that was interpreted as the National Anthem of Panama was almost an improvisation, everything happened in 1903, during the visit of William I. Buchanan, former ambassador and minister plenipotentiary of the United States to Panama, who would make the presentation of his credentials to the Interim Governing Board.
Part of protocol of the ceremonial act were to be interpreted anthems of each country. Since Panama didn't had an official one, the Isthmian Anthem was chosen. It was a very popular song, used in schools to honor the republic. However, we needed our own anthem. It was then that Jorge Santos, who happens to direct the band who played the anthem, asked Jeronimo de la Ossa composition of a hymn, so he did. However, it is not the same song that we currently sing, historians have not been defined, who made these changes.
In 1906, the National Assembly adopted the anthem in accordance with Law 39 and on an interim basis since it was thought to make a contest to choose a new composition. But the Panamanian people chose hymn with which they were familiar. Later in the Constitution of 1941, an article adopts it definitively calling it National Anthem.
In 2012, first recorded digitally national anthem, as there was a digital version. The new recording was made at the National Theater of Panama with the National Symphony Orchestra, Choir and Musica Viva Panama Polyphonic Choir, under the direction of Maestro Jorge Ledezma. This new version is available for the public to be downloaded gratuita.1
