Character Description

Marcus is the main character in my novel. He was told by his father to be the "man of the house" while he was away. Marcus is a 15 year old responsible teenage boy that shows he's willing to help his mother with his little sister Megan. Marcus was countable when his mom need him to watch Megan, while she went to work. He gives up going to dances and on dates with Courtney to help his mom around the house. Marcus is a very caring kid when it comes to people. When Courtney's father died, he took her belongings from school and brought them home to her.

Setting

The main setting in my novel is a military base, close to Toronto. It took place in 2009, mainly in Kandahar. The atmosphere was scary at times, but also overjoyed with happiness. At a military base you never know if you could be leaving one day, or if they ask you to stay on tour for another couple of months.

Best/Worst Parts

In my opinion the best part of my novel was when Marcus, his sister and his mom were waiting on the tarmac for their father to get off the plane. You could tell Marcus was so excited to see him, but he was also scared that he might of changed while he was gone, or that he would look at Marcus differently.

The worst part of this story was when Eric Walters never said if Marcus and Courtney were dating or not. He always threw out hints that they liked each other, but he almost left it as a cliffhanger.

Plot Summary

My novel is about a family of 3 living at home, waiting for their father to return from serving a tour in Afghanistan. The family has no contact with their father for more than 3 weeks straight. Marcus' crush, Courtney, has a dad that also serves in Afghanistan. Marcus is left to take care of his family, while his father is overseas. Marcus witnesses an explosion on t.v. that happened where his father was. Courtney was then told it was her father that had passed in the explosion. The next day, a member of Marcus' dad's squad back in Afghanistan died. Things took a turn and life had changed for the family of 3.

Beauty and the Beast

Conflicts

The Beauty and the Beast was represented in my book by Marcus being the innocent beauty that helps his mother with everything while his father is on tour. The beast was represented by his father coming back home with a post-dramatic stress disorder. As he couldn't help but to get angry at Marcus and Megan at times, he also hit their mother. He was uncontrollable one night and hit Marcus while he tried to go back to Afghanistan. Marcus wouldn't let him go and fought to hold him back from going.

- not having contact with his father for nearly 3 weeks

- Courtney's fathers death

- Marcus' father wanting to drink and drive

- his father noticing he changed into a badman

- his father not wanting to seek help when he needed it

About the author

Intended Audience

Eric Walters was born in Toronto, Ontario.

He is 57 years old, and is a father of 3. He has published over 90 books, and has presented to more than 1.5 million kids in North America. His books are translated into dozens of languages so everyone can read them. He has also won over 100 awards.

I would recommend this book to grades 7-11. I would recommend the book to boys in lower grades like 7&8 because they would be interested in the war aspect of it. But on the other hand higher grades like 9,10,&11 would understand what message Eric Walters tried to get across.
