Jackie lettered in 4 sports in high school and even earned an outstanding service award in junior college. But then in his sophomore year his brother Frank died in a motorcycle accident. Then Jackie tried to overcome the tragedy by immersing himself in sports.

After being discharged from the army, Jackie began to play baseball professionally.At the time, the sport was segregated. Jackie had to play in the negro leagues when he was chosen by Branch Rickey, president of Brooklyn dodgers, to help integrate major league baseball.

Robinson also became a v0cal champion for african-american athletes, civil rights, and other social and political causes. In July 1949 he testified on discrimination before the the house Un-American activities committee. In 1952 he publicly called out the Yankees as a racist organization for breaking the color barrier five years after he played for the dodgers.

Jack Roosevelt "Jackie" Robinson was born Jan. 31st 1919 in Cairo, Georgia. He was the youngest of five children. They were very poor and raised by a single mother.

Jackie continued his education at the University of Los Angeles, California. Jackie was the university's first student to win varsity letters in four sports. He moved to Honolulu where he played football with the Honolulu bears.

When he was around one his family moved to Pasadena, Ca. Jackie grew to love sports after watching his brothers excel at them. He would play baseball, basketball, football and run track.

Jackie attended John Muir High School and Pasadena Junior college where he continued to play sports.But everything was not great. The schools he was attending were white majority and he was discriminated against and dealt heavily with racism.

Robinson soon became hero of the sport, he was an exceptional base runner, Robinson stole home 19 time during his career. He also became the highest paid athlete in dodgers history. His success in the major leagues opened a door to other african american baseball players.

Jackie had 4 siblings.They were Edgar, Frank, Willa Mae and 1936 Olympic silver medalist Mack Robinson. His mother was Mallie Robinson and his father was Jerry Robinson.

From 1942 to 1944 , Robinson served as a second lieutenant in the United States army. Jackie never saw combat, but he was court- martialed for refusing to move to the back of the bus. When he was ordered by the bus driver to move to the back so a white person could have his seat.
