  • In 1941, the U.S. Selective Service System includes homosexuality as a disqualifying condition for inclusion in the WWII draft.
  • Uniform Code of Military Conduct is created which forbade sodomy among military personnel.
  • Gays were seen as security risks due to their "vulnerability to blackmail."
  • The Articles of War of 1916 states that any person subject to military law who commits "assault with intent to commit sodomy" shall be tried and punished as a court martial sees fit.
  • Lieutenant Gotthold Fredrick Enslin becomes the first documented service member to be dismissed from the U.S. military for homosexuality.
  • Drummed out of the continental army under an order from General George Washington.

  • On September 3rd, 2013 the department of defense officially extends spousal and family benefits to same-sex military couples.
  • After failing to overcome opposition of allowing gays to serve openly in the military, President Clinton Implements "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"
  • over 13,000 members of the armed services have been discharged under the law.
  • Gays were one of the few groups of able bodied young men considered ineligible for the draft.
  • Anti-war groups instructed straight young men to fake homosexuality in order to avoid service. "hoaxosexual" was coined for men in this position.
  • December 22nd, 2010- President Obama Signs the repeal of DADT into law.
  • January 2013- Pentagon agrees to pay full separation pay to all service members involuntarily separated from the military after November 10th, 2004 under DADT.

  • Many religiously conservative countries, mainly in Africa, Asia, and most of Latin America prohibit gays from serving in the military.
  • "There are some 80 countries in the world that still see homosexuality as a crime and a handful that still see it as a crime punishable by death."
  • About 30 countries in the world allow LGBTQ men and women to serve in the military.
  • These countries include nearly all of the NATO members, South Africa, Brazil and the Philippines.
