How many draft dodgers were in Canada?

Most of the draft dodgers that came to Canada stayed behind even after the 1977 pardon. The rest of them were in America, Europe or Asia.

According to the BBC, at least 60,000 war-eligible men were draft dodgers that fled to Canada. The total population of draft dodgers and their families that came to Canada was around 125,000.

What are draft dodgers?

The End

Their reasons for becoming draft dodgers

Draft dodgers are people who flee to Canada to avoid military service after being drafted for the Vietnam war.

Many people disagreed with the Vietnam War and thought it was pointless. They thought it was an unnecessary war and it hurt the security of the US and its citizens. They also thought that the US was aggressive in forcing their ideals upon Vietnam even though it wasn't in their best interest.

USA's Reaction to Draft Dodgers

How did this affect the lives of Canadians?

Many of the Americans that came to Canada stayed behind even after the war and they came to be some of the "best-educated group [Canada] ever received." (Citizenship and Immigration)

Many people who served in the Vietnam War had grudge against people who dodged the war. Draft dodgers were also labeled as "cowards". Although most draft dodgers used legal methods to avoid the war, it was still frowned upon by people who were for the service in the Vietnam War.
