The animals had realized the earth was still to soft to inhabbit so they sent buzzard down to inspect the land. Buzzard flew for days and grew tired, he grew so tired that he flew close the ground that his wings lifted up mud and created the mountains, which is now the Cherokee country. Later on the animals had come down to Earth only to find no light, so they placed the sun in the sky but it was too close so they raised it enough so they would survive without being burned. On earth the animals and plants were told to stay awake for seven days and nights, only a few were able to complete this task and were rewarded with being nocturnal and staying green (plants) all year round.

The son also followed his mother into the market when she went to get corn and grain. He saw that when she rubbed her sides it would fill up her basket with corn and grain. The mother saw her son and said that now she must die because he saw her secret. But she requested that when she die he drag her body around the corn field 7 times, but the boy only did so twice. So that is why corn takes half a year to grow.

Kanati and Selu were among the first humans and they had a son. Everyday the father, Kanati would go out and bring home fresh game, and the mother, Selu, would always return with corn. The son became curious and followed his father hunting and found that his father opened a cave and a deer would come out. After seeing this the son opened the cave and all the deer and other animals were released, thus why Cherokee must hunt for game
