F. Scott Fitzgerald: A Short Autobiography

By: Paige Hill

Read all about it in my articles!

This article elaborates on the idea of posttraumatic growth. It uses quotes from many people who suffer from any and all sorts of life challenges (i.e. cancer, bereavement, college, etc.). It is a collection of studies from all over, done by all types of doctors, and conducted in many different years. The article concluded that posttraumatic growth stems from personal attempt at recovery from traumatic life events.

Can you conceive my concepts?

What did this teach me?

West, J. L. W., III. (2011). F. Scott Fitzgerald: A short autobiography. New York, NY: Simon & Schuster, Inc.

1. Identity Moratorium: an individual who explores life’s possibilities but does not commit to self-chosen values and goals (i.e. Fitzgerald admits to not having set goals in his early adulthood although he has had experience to form them)

2. Average Life Expectancy: the number of years that an individual born in a particular year can expect to live (i.e. he went through a few phases faster then normal due to shorter life expectancy)

3.Reminiscence: process of telling stories about people and events from the past and reporting associated thoughts and feelings (i.e. chapter 19: My Generation)

I learned that Fitzgerald was a much more complex person than his blank face as the writer of books we enjoy. He went through many stressful times and traumatic events in his short life. Some normative, some not. He had some intense personal struggles with writing and maintaining a healthy marriage. He went through what we call a mid-life crisis slightly early due to his short life expectancy but during this time he struggled to write, begin to drink too often, and strained his marriage with the girl he chased after with a completed novel.

Why oh why did I pick this book?

I have honestly not read many books by F. Scott Fitzgerald. However, this book has peaked my interest in his works. I have only read The Great Gatsby, but after this project, I will definitely read his first novel, This Side of Paradise. My lack of actual knowledge of his works was not my reason of interest. I was simply interested in the author of The Great Gatsby because it is a book that touched and captured many people across the world, including close friends from my hometown.
