COLUMBUS'S MISSION

WORKS CITED

Columbus was supposed to find a trade route to the far east for Spain where they could trade with the rich and wealthy nations there such as China, Japan, and the spice islands.

If he could have accomplished it the Europeans could have brought back a rich cargo of silk, spices and other goods.

However after 2 months of rough sailing they landed not in the far east but in the Caribbean island of San Salvador.

HOW DID THE NATIVES TREAT COLUMBUS

NATIVES

The Arawak indians that lived there were a kind peaceful people that offered Columbus help salvaging his ship and saving his men after the Santa Maria crashed into rocks.

They gave what little food and shelter they had to the newcomers and treated them as guests.

They helped the europeans survive and when they found out that the newcomers wanted gold they gave all them gold they had in their houses

Columbus's message back to Spain said

that they were the most generous peoples

HOW DID COLUMBUS TREAT THE NATIVES

CHINA

Columbus immediately took their land for Spain and enslaved them to work in his gold mines. After two years 125,000 of the natives on the island were dead. If an Indian worker did not deliver his full quota of gold dust by the deadline they would cut off the man’s hands and tie them around his neck .

Slavery was also commonplace and it was so hard for these people that some of them committed suicide. Catholic law forbade the enslavement of Christians but however Columbus simply refused to baptize the natives so that they could not be christians so that the rule would not work

He was so cruel that he was eventually shipped off tho Spain in chains with his two brothers but Isabella and Ferdinand sent him back without any punishment since he was the source of their newly founded wealth.

LETS CELEBRATE COLUMBUS DAY

By going into somebody's house and tell them you live there now

Protests by natives and non-natives alike are occurring at multiple Columbus day parades across America with strong support from the common people.

The living conditions and situations of many natives in countries that Columbus influenced are still incomparable to how the immigrants and settlers live. Most natives live in small rural villages far away from important resources and education while the settlers are in big cities with plenty of everything.

Prejudice and racism are still directed towards those people and the natives, who were here before us, are now treated like a invaders.
