What is Cultural Carrying Capacity?

The cultural carrying capacity is the maximum number of individuals of a species that the human population will tolerate. The number may or may not be the same as the species' biological carrying capacity.

Examples of Cultural Carrying Capacity

Cultural carrying capacity depends on human attitudes towards a species, so hunting deer would be an example of a species reaching its cultural carrying capacity

How do some analysts apply this concept in considering the question of whether the earth is overpopulated?

The cultural carrying capacity can affect the biological carrying capacity of Earth. When humans decide the limit of a species on Earth, regardless of biological carrying capacity of the species, the biological carrying capacity of species can change. Cultural carrying capacity is a human impact. When humans create cultural carrying capacity, it affects ecosystem services. Reduced ecosystem services means there are less natural resources for the ecosystem. With less resources, the carrying capacity for humans is reduced. So, analysts can determine how much of resources and services will be reduced. Therefore, analyst can determine when the human population will become overpopulated.
