RED By Taylor Swift

Presented to you by Michael and Mason

Alliteration

Alliteration is the repetition of the beginning sound in a word.

"Missing him was dark gray all alone"

All alone is the repetition of the "ah" sound.

Assonance and Consonance

Hyperbole

Assonance- words with internal rhyme but different ending sounds

Consonance- words with no internal rhyme but share the same ending sound

Right and Front- Consonance

Never and Red- Assonance

Imagery

A hyperbole is an intentional exaggeration.

" he's spinnin' round in my head"

She is trying to explain that she cant stop thinking about him, but he is obviously not literally spinning around in her head.

Repetition

Imagery is very descriptive writing that paints an image for the reader.

"Like the colors in autumn, so bright just before they lose it all"

This is an example of imagery because it paints a mental picture in your head of what the leafs and nature look like at that time.

Repetition is a constant use of a word, phrase, or sound.

"Loving him was red"

Taylor repeats this phrase multiple times in the song to get the point across that she loved him with a lot of passion and fire.

Symbolism

Symbolism is something that represents something else.

An example would be the color dark grey representing depression

A lot of people use colors to represent emotions in life, and throughout the song Taylor uses colors to explain the way her heart feels.

Metaphor

A metaphor is a comparison of two things not using like or as.

"Losing him WAS blue"

Taylor is venting about how her breakup was gloomy for her and that it represents the color blue because blue is a color well known for representing sadness.

Simile

A simile is a comparison of two things using the words like or as.

"Forgetting him was LIKE trying to know somebody you've never met."

Description: You could never possibly know someone if you have not met them, so Taylor is saying that she will never forget her significant other.

Identify and Explain

  • This song is a lyric poem.
  • It's theme is she has a lot of emotions after breaking up with her significant other.
  • The reason we like Taylor's song is because when it comes on the radio you can't help but roll down your windows and sing along at the top of your lungs.
  • This song would be better as a song because the way she sings it makes the lyrics have a deeper meaning.

Song lyrics (cont.)

Song Lyrics

[Chorus:]

Losing him was blue like I'd never known

Missing him was dark grey all alone

Forgetting him was like trying to know somebody you never met

But loving him was red

Oh, red

Burning red

[Bridge:]

Remembering him comes in flashbacks and echoes

Tell myself it's time now, gotta let go

But moving on from him is impossible

When I still see it all in my head

In burning red

Burning, it was red

[Chorus:]

Oh, losing him was blue like I'd never known

Missing him was dark grey all alone

Forgetting him was like trying to know somebody you never met

'Cause loving him was red

Yeah, yeah, red

We're burning red

[Post-Chorus:]

And that's why he's spinnin' 'round in my head

Comes back to me, burning red

Yeah, yeah

His love was like driving a new Maserati down a dead-end street

[Verse 1:]

Loving him is like driving a new Maserati down a dead-end street

Faster than the wind, passionate as sin, ending so suddenly

Loving him is like trying to change your mind once you're already flying through the free fall

Like the colors in autumn, so bright just before they lose it all

[Chorus:]

Losing him was blue like I'd never known

Missing him was dark grey all alone

Forgetting him was like trying to know somebody you never met

But loving him was red

Loving him was red

[Verse 2:]

Touching him was like realizing all you ever wanted was right there in front of you

Memorizing him was as easy as knowing all the words to your old favorite song

Fighting with him was like trying to solve a crossword and realizing there's no right answer

Regretting him was like wishing you never found out that love could be that strong
