The four presidential candidates:

  • Henry Clay
  • John Quincey Adams
  • William Crawford
  • Andrew Jackson

Henry Clay won people over with his quick wit and charm (well liked by general public). He had a great ability to negotiate deals, so he became Speaker of the House.

John Quincey Adams was the son of 2nd President John Adams. Many people found him cold (NOT well liked by general public). He spent his life studying national politics. He was the Secretary of State under President Monroe.

William Crawford was a long-time member of Congress. Many people knew him as "President Monroe's Secretary of the Treasury" (not really known to general public).

Andrew Jackson was the hero of the Battle of New Orleans (which is said to be one of the greatest American victories of all time). People saw him as the symbol of a self-made man of the Western Frontier. Many ordinary Americans saw him as themselves(relatable to general public)

The Corrupt Bargain

In the election, Jackson won far more popular votes than

any other candidate. However, none of the candidates won a majority of the vote. For the second time in American History, the House would have to pick the president.

Henry Clay recieved the fewest amount of electoral votes = out of race.

William Crawford became ill= had to withdraw from race.

This left two candidates-

John Quincey Adams and

Andrew Jackson.

So, who won? Just as you are waiting in suspense now, people that lived at the time were waiting for the result.

Henry Clay was a deciding factor in all of this, and he swung his vote towards Adams, so of course, so did his supporters.

So, John Quincey Adams won. The guy that no one liked.

Adams later named Henry Clay secretary of state.

People that supported Jackson charged Adams and Clay with a "corrupt bargain".

Political Party splits

Following the election of 1824, the Democratic- Republican

party split.

People that supported Clay and Adams called themselves the Republicans.

After hearing this, Jackson and his followers were outraged. So, they made the Democratic Party. People that are democrats today draw their roots back to Andrew Jackson.
