Solomon Asch

Accomplishments

  • In 1951 he published a study about the effects of group pressure upon the modification and distortion of judgment.
  • Showed how peer pressure influences social behavior, and how people tend to act in a decent way towards each other.
  • In 1956 he published a study about studies of independence and conformity.
  • Demonstrated the power of social influence on a person that is still used as inspiration to this day.
  • Supervised Stanley Milgrams research about obedience.

Why I chose him

Solomon Asch was born on September 14th in 1907 in Warsaw, Poland. He came to the United States at the age of 13, and got his bachelors degree at the College of the City of New York in 1928. he earned his Masters degree in 1932 at Columbia University. He served as a professor at Swartmorth College for 19 years in the beginning of World War II.

During the 1950s, Asch became famous for his series of experiments (known as the Asch conformity experiments) that demonstrated the effects of social pressure on conformity.

Face

Psychology has always been an interest to me, and while I as taking a class in this subject, it only slightly touched on this person and his achievements. I believe he is a leader because he experimented about things that he saw and he got good merits and degrees.
