Socialization

  • If you take a dance class, it provides an opportunity to meet new people.
  • Events are put on that encourage dancing (school dances, weddings, parties, etc).
  • Certain religions and cultures have special dancing rituals that are performed for special occasions.

Instinct

  • Dance is instinctive.
  • Before people could talk, it's believed that they danced to communicate.
  • Babies are born with the ability to move to a beat.
  • “Humans like watching others in motion (and being in motion themselves), adding music to the mix may be a pinnacle of reward.” says neurologist, John Krakauer.

What is dance?

Dance is the movement of the body to a rhythm.

Sport or not?

To answer a commonly asked question ("Is dance a sport?"), yes, dance could actually be considered a sport. The definition of a sport is "an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment", so if performers dance in competitions, dance definitely could be considered a sport.

In this interview, dancers form the Phoenix Dance Theater, in England, were asked why they dance.

Introduction

I have been dancing since I was three, and I love it. I've taken lots of classes in lot's of styles, and really enjoy it. But I began to think, "Why do people dance?" I know why I dance, but I thought it would be interesting to learn about why other people dance.

Expression & Stress Relief

Exercise

  • Dance is a great form of exercise.
  • Dancing builds strength.
  • Dance is aerobic.
  • Dance is movement.
  • Dance can improve balance.
  • Programs like Zumba and Jazzercise are dance based work out programs that make exercising more enjoyable through dance.
  • Often times, a dance can tell a story or portray an emotion.
  • Moving to a rhythm feels good to people.
  • Many dancers say that "When you dance, you can let go of everything."
  • Exercise is a natural stress reliever, so dancing can help get rid of stress, and make you happier.

In conclusion, there are many reasons that people dance. Whether it's for the physical activity, or the social aspect, dance is widely appreciated. All these are great reasons to dance, and I think a little bit of all of them apply to every dancer.
