The Quebec Act

1774

The Quebec Act happened because...

  • - The French were too strong a culture to be controlled
  • - The British wanted the colony to be Loyal

The Quebec Act:

1) Official Billingualism: English and French were now official.

2) Catholics were allowed to be in the Government

3) French Civil for Property, Inheritance and disputes

4) Power was given to the Catholic Church

Short Term Effects:

-The French got some of their heritage back

-The British and the French were on better terms with each other

Long Term Effects:

-the 2 languages would become the most spoken throughout the land

-French and British would be the foundation of what is now America and Canada

What facts and arguements could be used to support your choice?

-This is the agreement that made real peace between the French and the British

What do you think some opposing arguements may be?

What people of different groups would say

English:

-"this isn't fair, we mostly basically won the war, we should be in control."

Non-Catholics:

-"this isn't fair we should get some power too!"

People in the Government:

-"Why were they(the Catholics)let in????"

What your bias might be in making the decision?

I would side with the French because I think that they are the victims in this case...

This is because, when the French were living peacefully in New France with the First Nations, the British had to come along and take over all their land.
